The Challenge
While R&D expenses have increased dramatically over the last few decades, the number of newly approved drugs has decreased significantly. Therefore, the pharmaceutical industry has recognized an urgent need to supply their pipelines with promising, new LEAD candidates. This trend is sustained by a systemic weakness of the current research model, which is based on random LEAD identification that utilizes easily accessible synthetic libraries. These sample libraries contain many chemical redundancies, and consequently, little variation. This results in a lack of unique, “drugable” LEAD structures.
NPs, on the other hand, have proven to provide a large number of innovative drugs out of the virtually unlimited chemical diversity of nature. They complement readily accessible synthetic structures, comprising an abundance of unique compounds. NPs, therefore, constitute an important option to enrich a product pipeline in the life science industry. As drug development has relied almost exclusively on synthetic libraries over the last few decades, most companies currently lack NP related know-how. They need to formulate a NP strategy that takes the complexity of NP into consideration, both in terms of accessibility and chemical optimization.
IMD’s uniqueness
With more than twenty years of experience as part of Bayer AG, pharmaceuticals are one of IMD’s core fields of expertise. We have a deep understanding of the “Dos” and “Don’ts” of NP research and can help define a specific NP strategy. Moreover, we provide an array of sophisticated tools and proven strategies to increase the probability of success.
IMD assures top-notch research processes and relies on a sound understanding of the scientific literature. We possess unique proprietary databases as well as a strong network of suppliers and collaborative partners. Consequently, we can offer new and promising impulses for your drug development process or pipeline.
