Privat-Dozent Dr. Marc Stadler

Director Fermentation/Microbiology

Dr. Stadler has gained 20 years of experience in various all fields of Natural Products chemistry and basic and applied mycology and microbiology.

He received a grant by the “Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes” and graduated with summa cum laude in 1993 in biology (Dept. Biotechnology, Kaiserslautern University, Germany, under supervision of Prof. H. Anke). His PhD thesis dealt with the discovery of bioactive compounds from invertebrate-associated fungi. A postdoctoral grant by the “Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft” later allowed him to research fungal chemical ecology at the Department of Natural Product Chemistry, Lund University, Sweden, (1994-1995) under supervision of Prof. O. Sterner. In 1995 he joined Bayer´s Natural Products research department, which he left in 2006 as Principal Research Scientist to take over his current position at IMD.

His current responsibilities still include IMD’s microbial culture collections, as well as fermentation, downstream processing, and isolation of Natural Products in gram scale. His expertise also includes e.g. microbial biotransformations, adaptation of screening technologies to Natural Products, and analytical chemistry. He co-authored more than 80 papers, patents, and book chapters and has acted as plenary speaker and symposium chair at various international conferences. As an internationally renowned expert on fungal taxonomy and chemotaxonomy, he maintains several scientific collaborations with leading mycologists and Natural Products chemists in Europe, America,. and Asia. Furthermore, he teaches mycology at Bayreuth University (Germany) and co-ordinates IMD's activities regarding various research grants that the company obtained from national und European funding institutions.
